A SPECIAL SATURDAY

This morning I got a phone call on my cell phone while working at the farm. It was my daughter Jackie.  She called to wish me Happy Birthday and told me that she was on her way to Gagetown to their annual Christmas in the Village craft fair with the kids.  I thanked her of course and my first question while holding a hay fork in my left hand was " What's going on? How come the kids are not in school and you're not at work? She answered, Mom, it's Saturday.

When I work seven days a week I loose track of time and and days. My birthday is just another day. I still have to do what I do everyday.

After I was done working at the farm, I came home  and showered and started to clean my kitchen because I had left it in a mess from all those wine bottles all over the sinks, dirty dishes on the counter, crumbs on the floor, etc. from the night before.  ( the secret to remove those wine labels is to soak them over night and it's easier to scrape off the labels and the glue.)
I was just finishing up and my daughter and three of her kids came to visit bearing a nice bottle of Apple Ice Wine made in Gagetown.  I made some tea and we played Snakes and Ladder with my little grand daughter. I was so lucky at every roll of the dices and finally won the game. My little granddaughter  had a look of disappointment on her face. I said," Thanks for the birthday gift of letting me win". She responded with a big smile," Oh Yeah."... It's all about perspective...

My granddaughter Mira is a fantastic talented and creative artist who has a great gift of turning anything she touches into something artistic. She knitted her own pair of wool gloves with yarn that she spun herself and she knitted those gloves without a pattern , mind you... She said that the thumbs were of different color because she ran out of yarn. She never ceases to amaze me.

Here is another shot with her gloves on.  I think that she did a fantastic job on those gloves. I can knit gloves but I need to follow a pattern.

Here the kids are running off  across the lawn to the barn to see the little calves before returning home.
I didn't get to hook but it was a great day because I got visitors.  Stay safe and cosy. JB

  1. Oh Happy, Happy Birthday! I am so glad you got to see your kids and grand-kids. I am so glad it turned out to be a fun day and how awesome your grand daughter spun the wool and then knitted the gloves herself, they look fantastic.
I am so glad you had a nice day after all, and that you won at snakes and ladders.
Blessings today on this special day.

  3. Thanks Kim and Cheri for the birthday wishes.

My grand daughter got her own spinning wheel that she varnished and assembled herself. She also makes and sell ornaments for Christmas and does amazingly well. It helps that her mom is an artist and my granddaughter has been raised in that creative environment. Each of my other five grand kids have some special gifts too.

    Hugs, JB

  4. Happy Birthday!!! What a talented grand daughter you have. Thank you for your visit and comment. I do think that the black friday has gotten out of hand. When I was a kid everything was closed on holidays so that the employees could have the day with their familys. I have a special way to get ready for Christmas which I will share later.

  9. Kim, Anonymous and Cathy G., what a treat to wake up to your good birthday wishes and sweet comments. I know that I'm blessed and I'm thankful every day for my kids and grand kids and I'm also blessed with blogger friends like you...

My football player calf drank her two bottles at supper time and didn't give me any hassle. There was one that I thought had a bit of scours and gave her a bottle of water with electrolyte and she should be fine this morning.
    Hugs, JB

  14. My daughter (your grand daughter), the one who made the gloves, is an amazing artist. It seems that everything she tries, she can do, and the learning time is almost nothing. It's like she has it all hard-wired into her head. She spins, knits, weaves, does needle felting, wet felting, drawing, painting, sculpting, and anything else that comes to her mind. We are all pretty amazed by her talents. I think she should end up working at Weta Studios, the people who did all of the props for the Lord of the Rings movies. She's that good. Even at her tender age.

Oh, and here's a tip I'll pass on. Getting wine labels and glue off is frequently a major pain (depending on whose labels they are, and the kind of glue they use), but one of those little scraper handles that uses an old safety razor blade is just the ticket to get the tough labels off of the bottle. I've peeled hundreds and hundreds over the years, and that's the best tool there is to help with the job. And they can help with many other jobs around the house as well.
