WASHDAY BLUES

I'm singing the blues, the Washday Blues that is. My Duet Whirlpool Front end  washer has given the ghost so it seams.

After contacting the dealer he said that the bearing was gone and it would cost approximately $1000. to fix it.  I bought it in 2005 and paid around $1400.00 for it and upon researching  customer complaints on the web,  I found out that a lot of people had the same problem and were not happy either.

It looks like the bearing is gone and the life expectancy of those washers is about 7 years.  That is so not right...

I went to my Co-op as they are luckily having a big 40th Anniversary sale this week and washers are on special amongst other things. They have a lower retail price than the suggested sale price and they pay the HST @.15%. ( Harmonized Sales Tax) this week.... We got there as soon as they opened so we could bring one home right away. The place was packed.

I didn't want a Whirlpool again so I asked for a Maytag. Guess what.... Whirlpool bought out Maytag. They are now the same company. I bit my lips and grumbled and bought a new Maytag anyway as they were cheaper. They had non in stock.... I have to wait two weeks for delivery.  In the meantime I'm running out of undies but thank goodness I have a big laundry tub and and old fashion washboard.  It'll be like the good old days when I was a little girl. You may remember my wash tub and washboard in my Childhood Memories rug, lol. I'm glad I still have my old washboard...

I wonder how long this Maytag washer will last.  Maybe it will outlast me. Now wouldn't that be something...

There's the pretty baby. It was so quiet and I could wash king size comforters in there. Doing laundry was never so easy I tell you...

The side ripped right off from the clonking when the bearing let go.

I did love that machine and I wasn't ready to see it die so soon. So now I'm singing the washday blues. Maybe I should cry in my beer too while I'm at it.  lol...

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. I really appreciate it and I also appreciate all my lurking friends too, just so you know. I'll join Dolly Parton  in singing the Washday Blues.

  1. oh, i hate that appliances (and vehicles) just don't last like they used to! the old days, a fridge or air conditioning unit or washer would last 20 years! now, 5 - 9 seems like we're asking too much. :(

  2. You know where there is a washing machine that you can use. It even comes with a free cup of tea!

  3. I made a comment, but it got eaten. Not going to bother typing it out again. Basically, we have a Maytag and so far it's good. But old stuff is better than new stuff, when it comes to longevity. My original was a lot longer, but this will have to do.

  5. It's sad to say but stuff isn't made to last anymore. Our kitchen stove died after about 5 years.

  7. Oh, no! That is terrible! I have a Whirlpool Cabrio that is a top loader, and we have been really pleased with it. Haven't had it as long as you have had yours, though. I am on pins and needles just waiting for our first built-in appliance to die. They were all installed at the same time 10 years ago when we built the house.

  8. hahaaaaaa I haven't heard Dolly sing that ... what fun .. .and hiss on appliances getting old .. .good grief! $1400 ought to buy you more than 7 years?! terrible

that's a lovely thought ... that it will outlast you! ... I can remember back in my Mother's day when 20 years was fairly common with appliances ... of course my Dad kept things running smoothly ... he loved tinkering with stuff.

gonna go listen to Dolly again... ! love Dolly

  10. I have a Maytag washer and dryer ~ washer had to have something or other last year but it didn't cost $1000 ~ that's crazy! Have a Maytag fridge also ~ have had ice maker repair twice! Remember that guy on the ad ~ the loneliest Maytag repairman? Seems like we could keep him busy!!

  11. We had a similar problem with maytag some years back. There is a used appliance dealer not far from our house and we bought one from them for $125.
That was five years ago and it's still working like a champ.
I won't buy a new washer or dryer again.
Maybe Maytag learned their lesson and fixes their products.

  12. So sorry about your washer... it really is sad that everything costs so much to begin with and never last as long as the ones before... we've been through 3 refrigerators in the 17 years we've been at this house... it's always the most expensive part that breaks (expensive enough it makes no sense at all to repair)...

  13. Ouch! Why does everything cost so much to fix. I think they do that so you have to buy new. We had a upright freezer that went out after three years. Part cost more than a new freezer so we bought a new one.
Keeping fingers crossed and knocking on wood that our old top load washer keeps chugging along!

  14. It's called "Planned Obsolescence"...manufacturers do it intentionally...make things that only last for so long so that the cost of repair is so expensive you just buy a new one. I'm due for a new washer/dryer duo too...it's just a matter of time.

  15. That is just not right. To only last 7 years. They are pretty the ones you have now and still look brand new. You don't have repairmen who could come out and fix it? My first set had been my parents washer and dryer from when I was a kid, it was a Maytag that last maybe 40 years. When we moved here I finally had to buy a new set. I bought a new set but nothing as nice as what you bought. I do not like buying appliances. I would use a scrub board though. I hope you get yours soon. 15 percent tax is just crazy, Julia. I thought California' is high at 7 percent something. Have a nice day.

  16. They don't make machines to last anymore, Julia. They want you to buy new ones. Hope your new ones last longer. Sarah

  17. We bought the cheap washer and dryer after our house flooded in 2010 and we had to replace everything. The dryer came from a store but the washer came from a guy on Craigslist. Every now and then it leaks--and every couple of loads, the spin cycle doesn't remove the water so we have to run spin twice. I think things just aren't made like they used to be. My husband said his mom had the same washer and dryer the entire time he was growing up--20 years or so. Those days are probably gone. The only bad thing is, we can't get a washer and dryer easily in and out of this house because the doors are too small!

  18. The same exact thing happened to me , I was Sick ! I went out & bought a cheap, very basic washing machine.....it was awful ! There wasn't a lint trap & all our clothes, including undies came out of the wash covered in lint ! I went out & bought LG washer ,but have a plain old fashioned dryer. I LOVE my washer, but after all my trouble, I am afraid to wash wool ..... I don't want to damage this washing machine. I have never washed wool in any of my washing machines....I'm afraid to. I just have to buy my wool washed & dyed....

  19. So sorry about your washing machine! It is terrible that things are not built to last any more.My set has just about had it and I dread the thought of looking for another one.Best of luck with the new one.Blessings,Jen

  20. Glad you got a new washer to replace the one that died..!! I don't own a washer and dryer now, but when we moved to Vermont, Joe and I bought a cheap Kenmore washer when we moved into our house during our remodeling "phase"! We intended to replace it with a nice washer-dryer set when the remodeling was finished..! However, 21 years later, I still had that washer which was plugging along!!! I think we replaced a belt or something once. And I never did have a dryer for 21 years ether...we just never got around to buying that washer-dryer set. LOL (I hung everything outside on the clothesline in warm months and hung clothes inside in winter on a drying rack in front of the heaters or wood stove! For us, it worked well as with just the two of us, we did not have a lot of laundry!!!)
That's my "back to the past" story and I'm stickin' to it..!! lol
    Hugs, Sunnie :)

  21. Well, that just stinks that your washer has bitten the dust sweet Julia. They just don't make them like they used to. Too bad they can't make them where they last as long as your washboard. I remember those days of tubs and washboards. Hope the Maytag gives you a lot of years. Hugs

  22. Oh, no...I am so sorry! I love my Whirlpool set. I like doing laundry, but dislike laundromats. Trucking with Bill, we have to use trucker facilities at stops. It takes forever, and is not like at home! Hugs!

  23. I have an ancient washer but since Jack does the laundry I don't complain about it! I hope the new one is a good one and lasts longer...plus, do you have a Laundromat any place close? I'd try that over a washboard! Good luck!

  24. I couldn't believe my eyes! You have the same washing set as I do & mine was purchased in 2004. The drier has been replaced but the washer still works! Fingers crossed it will hang in a little longer. I too love the front loader, as I child we had a wringer washer & can Iaugh now but didn't then when all the shank buttons flew of as my housecoat as it went through the wringer. lol Appliances in general just last 10 years now, job security for those making them? Whirlpool is Maytag now!! Good luck with the new one Julia.
    Hugs,
    Cynthia
