YAY!!! UPDATE ON JOSEPHINE'S PACKAGE & MY BASEMENT CLEAN UP.

For those of you who have been following my blog, my package to Josephine was mailed on Oct 8, and missed the delivery truck since it was late afternoon but to my surprise and despite the Holiday long weekend, it reached Vicki in the States on October 14th and she sent me a very touching email to let me know that she had received it.
I never expected that the package would arrive so fast since it wasn't going until the next day.

It's been a flurry of activity at my house  with dust and soot all over the floor and everywhere and it's been a flurry of activity at the farm too lately. The tarp barn has been finished  and filled with hay and I haven't had time to post photos yet.

I finally got the major part of the basement pressure washed, the humidity caused my pressure washer to start and stop in spurts so I barely finished the main area but I got it done.... I was peeling a lot of the old paint from the cement floor so it took me two whole afternoons and some time in the evenings. I still have another room to pressure wash but that room shouldn't take very long as the floor doesn't have paint to peel. I'll have to find out if my pressure washer will operate again to finish my job. Hopefully it will have a chance to dry this weekend. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

This old wood stove has been removed to be replaced with a more energy efficient stove and part of the old bricks that were on the floor also has been removed.  It still looked good when all clean but the bricks inside are all broken. It's been in use for a very long time and has served us well especially on cold blustery winter days.

My husband will add some extra support  from the ceiling in the basement to make everything nice and sturdy. A plywood subfloor will be screwed in and porcelain tiles will be installed then the new stove will be installed along with a new chimney liner and because of some unforeseen needed extras, it will cost me an arm and a leg and maybe an eye, but I'll feel safer as we are getting a professional to do the job properly. They certify the job for insurance purposes and brings everything up to code.

I just learned that they won't be able to put the new stove in until November 27th as they are booked solid for stove installations.

Because the stove is in very close proximity to the wooden door, it will be replaced with a steel door and frame to comply with insurance requirements...  So I feel  good to get this finally started. Shhhh... we need a new roof too.$$$. I guess the economy will benefit.

Some more photos to follow when things get going.
Have a great weekend everyone and stay safe.
JB

  3. I used to have one of those Fisher stoves. They look so warm and cozy. What are you going to use the basement for when you get the new floor down and new stove?

  9. Hi Julia,
I like your old stove pretty well. It looks like it has been a work horse. It looks like you could cook on it too. I know how much I love my wood stove. It will heat this whole house.
I will be glad when you get your basement all finished. That will feel so good won't it? What are you going to do with it once it is finished?
A wool hooking studio perhaps? You are such a hard worker Julia.
I can't wait to see pictures.

  11. You are always working. I bet the basement will look good when you are finished. Your new stove will be so nice. I am glad that you are taking all the safety precautions. Roofs are so expensive. Ours needs to be replaced. We had it patched around the chimney and the person doing it said the wood elsewhere is nice and dry and is fine. I know that a buyer will have issues with it being so old. That's one reason we lowered the price.
I need to get my things in the mail soon. I move so slowly sometimes.

  13. I actually enjoy pressure washing, but the last time I use my washer, it acted up too.
I guess it's because mine is used infrequently.
Sounds like your basement will be amazing once you get it finished.

  18. Sweet Julia I love that stove, if I had one like it I would be tempted to keep it around for decoration. Can't wait to follow all that you are having done. Sorry you have to wait awhile to get the stove but sounds like things are rolling and it won't be too much longer. Hugs!

  19. I grew up with a wood burning stove like that. Every time I see one, I'm reminded of winter nights when we'd pop popcorn directly on top of the stove. Good memories.

  21. Your old stove has a charming look to it Julia but the new one will be oh so much more efficient this winter. I too had to jump through a few hoops to have the insurance company approve my new stove & now all is done & right. The cottage will be my residential home in a few years so I too want thing done right the first time. Glad that the snail mail worked quickly to deliver Josephine's package to her. Your such a good karma person Julia & I hope more good things do come your way. What are your plans for the basement? There were a whole lot of ceramic molds occupying that space. I've never heard of power washing a basement, sounds like a lot of work, you do so much with machinery. It's because of you I had the confidence to drive the big tractor this year & yes it has made the job of mowing so much easier. Thank you for being you! Hugs, Cynthia

  22. I don't know anyone who works as hard as you do. All the best with your home improvement projects. Love that stove. And I so enjoyed your story of the calf triplets. That must be very unusual and surely they deserved the attention they got. Great names for them too.
