Like I said, this is a very quick post to show you my progress on my grandfather rug.
I've been agonizing about hooking his face since the photo is really not showing the dimensional side of the face and I had to go on my gut feelings.
I hooked and if it didn't looked right or not three dimensional enough, I simply reverse hooked ( put out the loops). I still have some tweaking to do but at least, it's looking a bit better.
I Didn't like the darker area on the cheek and tweaked it a bit in the second photo.
At least I have the face hooked and it still need lots of tweaking on the eyes, the mouth and probably somewhere else but I wouldn't know what to change until I study it more.
This is to show how I kept tract of my different values. This is and earlier photo. I labelled my wool colors using numbers from 1 to 5.
If you want a closer look, just click on the photo to enlarge them.
I'm off to the barn.
Have a great day and stay safe from the major storm that's coming our way.
Thanks for your visit. I so appreciate your comments.

ReplyDeleteWowwwww! Amazing job. I wish I could do that.I just started a cross stitch pattern yesterday.I have plenty other project on the go too. Before I try this I want to try a painting. That will probably be next winter before I get at that. Lucky one who gets this as a heirloom. Keep safe in the storm. Double your socks in your boots to go to the barn.Love <3
ReplyDeleteYou never cease to amaze! All that talent in one human being! And a good heart to go with it. You definitely make this world a better place. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYou are an amazing artist. I'm so impressed. The rug looks fabulous and I can't wait to see the finished product. That will be a wonderful family heirloom to pass down. Stay safe and warm, that storm is suppose to be a doosey!
ReplyDeleteJulia,
ReplyDeleteIt is WONDERFUL! His eyes are so expressive.
I hope the storm decides to skip you. We only got a couple inches and that's fine by me!
Stay warm and safe :)
Lauren
Julia, I think the rug is wonderful! I've no idea how to begin a project like that. I hope the storm doesn't give you any great problems. Keep warm, and stay safe! xo Nellie

ReplyDeleteI hope you stay safe, that looks like a big storm coming your way. I think your rug looks fantastic. You did a really nice job.
ReplyDeleteEven Ron was impressed. He you had done such a fine job. :)
I was thinking about you today and how cold you get. I hope you don't have to be out in the blizzard as much. I will be praying for you.
Wow, I have never seen a face done like that. I think it looks great. I think they eyes are my favorite. You have artistic talent for sure. Pease be careful in all that snow and cold. We had several inches and more coming but nothing like what the east is getting. It's funny we are on the tail end of the maps. Have a good week. (((((HUGS))))
ReplyDeleteYour rug is looking great! I love his eyes they look like grandson, James' beautiful eyes. The nor'easter is coming but your going to be so cozy with that new stove of yours! Be careful moving from the house to the barn, it's going to be blowing like a hurricane. Thinking of you as I watch the weather network. Stay warm & safe.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Cynthia
That is truly amazing. My sister knows how to do that and it always blows me away.

Looks great Julia! Just keep on hooking and it will all come together... it will truly be a family heirloom when complete!
ReplyDeleteHey...your Grandfather is looking good, Julia! I like how you adjusted his cheek colour and I know what you mean about having to study the piece a bit more to see what needs to be "tweaked"!!! :)
ReplyDelete( For the portrait of my father, I just sat and stared at the rug in progress for hours it seemed...just to then change 1 or 2 strips!!!!!)
He is a handsome guy...and I'm happy to see that you have had some time to hook in your busy world..! Happy Hooking!
Hugs, Sunnie :)
WOW! I think it looks amazing!! I love how real it looks. His eyes look good to me. He looks so handsome.

ReplyDeleteOMG, Julia... Your hooking is wonderful and agree with your changes as the second picture is better. What a talented hooker you are with fine cut on a human face and more talented than me.
ReplyDeleteHave a great evening.
This is incredible! To be able to make a person's face into a rug...wow. I will say that my sister is an artist and she always said the human face is one of the hardest things to get right on PAPER. And this is an even harder medium, so I'm in awe!
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOLLY GIRL!!! that is a fabulous looking rug! you are doing a great job on the face, faces are so difficult to reproduce, I would have never thought it even possible with wool, you have skills, serious skills!
ReplyDeleteNice work Julia!
Juilia, I just LOVE your grandfather rug!

Julia honey your rug is coming along nicely. I love that you are doing one of your grandfather. How special this will be too you and your family. I think it is going to be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBeen thinking a lot about you with all the snow storms going through your area. I don't know how you take care of the cows in your weather.
We have been lucky for two days now with warm temps and sunshine. Of course cold and rain headed this way again.
You take of yourself. Stay warm and cozy
Love ya
Maggie
Sweet Julia I am just in awe of your amazingly beautiful work on this rug. Wow, what a talented lady you are. Can't wait to see the rug when you are all finished with it.
ReplyDeleteHope it has gotten warmer there and you are not half freezing out in the barn taking care of the calves.
Think about you a lot and send up prayers for you.
Love and hugs, Maggie
You are amazing....your art honors your grandfather and keeps your history alive. I love that. Hope the green grass beneath all that snow
ReplyDeletecomes peeking through soon and that you're warm and safe and well.
Much love,
Jennifer
I went and took a look at your hurricane post. Sad that the tree with the eagles nest was knocked down during the storm. How exciting that you still have a pair of eagles that close to your home. I had a wonderful time spotting these lovely birds yesterday. Thanks for the stopping by my blog and taking a look at my photos. Pat
