ANOTHER FRIDAY EVENING AT JULIA'S PUB

Not much interesting stuff to report today as I was rather preoccupied part of the day. Since it was raining cats and dogs today my husband and I went to town to try to apply for Seniors Income Supplement Allowance. We usually use rainy days for things like this since we can't work outdoors. My husband gets his Senior's Pension  and Canada Pension Plan benefits and I'm on a rather conservative salary and will be receiving my Senior 's pension next year. There  were forms that we were supposed to fill out and as soon as he received his Senior's pension but we've been both busy and put it off all summer. We don't know if we qualify yet but it can't hurt to apply.

I came back home to eat lunch, wrote a check and paid some bills on line. I brought a milk sample to  to the Agriculture Lab for analysis and back down town to pick up calf feed, then up town to buy a couple of plastic floor scrapers for the barn at Canadian Tire, some cat food at the Co-op. When I got home I put some pork ribs to simmer and prepared every thing I needed for a stir-fry and  after work I came home, cleaned up and put the ribs in the oven in a 5 Asian Spice Sauce because I had forgotten to buy the regular sweet and sour Garlic rib sauce. By this time the meat was falling off the rib bones. I cooked some instant noodles and added sesame oil and soya sauce. Since I had no beer, we settle for some red wine and later some tea and carrot cake. Sorry the cook was too busy to take pictures. Now it's time to relax as this rainy weather gets me to feel very tired.

Have a great weekend everyone and thanks for putting up with me every night.  JB

  1. Hi Julis,
Isn't it funny how the weather can make you feel tired or elated? Your meal sounds wonderful - warm and conforting. It is a pain in the neck and other places too to fill out all of the require govenment forms. We have some of those in the states when you get past 55. It is worth it in the long run. Hope you have a great weekend.

  2. You're right Doris about the body being affect by the weather. I feel like a regular barometer. I didn't slept well last night and woke up at 3:00 AM. and had difficulty getting back to sleep and got up tired. When the weather is cold and damp I have arthritic pain that keeps me awake too. That's all part of the right of passage to old age. Thank goodness for Advil. JB

  4. Your dinner sounds wonderful. It looks like you might have a rainy weekend too. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we have one too. It was 94 degrees today. We broke all kinds of records for November. It is supposed to drop 20 degrees by Sunday. Rainy and blowy.
I hope you have a lovely weekend anyway.

  5. Hi Julia, I was just wondering how many cows you have? I saw a calf being born on T.V. and boy is that a big baby! The Dinner sounded good. It's been really hot where I live and cold sounds good for a change.

  6. Wasn't that weather wild? We had scattered power outages and phone problems. Your ribs sound yummy. I have never been able to cook edible ribs. Mine are always tough.

  7. Thanks for stopping by everyone. Tammy, I was surprised that even though I didn't had my regular rib sauce, they were very good.

Farm Girl, that is going to be quite a drop in temperature. That's how it's been for us this fall, hot and cold and hot and cold. Hope you have a nice weekend too.

Larkside garden girl, we have 140 head of cattle , this includes the calves, the heifers and the milking cows. We milk 70 cows. The numbers fluctuate but we try to maintain that amount of heads of cattle.

Kim, hope that you were not affected too badly with power outage, here we were OK.
To get tender ribs, I simmer them slowly on the stove until tender, about an hour or so in just enough water to cover with a little salt, pepper and onion or onion flakes and then I put them in a glass pan and add a bit of the liquid that left in the pan and add the sauce, either Bar-B-Q or Sweet and Sour Garlic Sauce and cook them in the oven at 400 F. until the sauce has thickened. I baste them a couple of times when they cook. I don't know if that's how they are supposed to be done , but that's how I do them. When I have time I make my own sauce from scratch. Have a great weekend everyone. JB
