YOU KNOW IT'S FALL WHEN...

You know it's Fall when the mice comes marching in...
Friday night I was at the computer when I thought I heard a scratching sound... can't be.... I waited to hear some more scratching and the only noise I heard was my husband snoring in his recliner and I dismissed the noise as my overactive imagination.

You see a few days ago I found the basement door ajar and although the garage is locked up, mice can come in through a small opening and run downstairs to the basement.  It has happened once many years ago when one of my student didn't quite shut the door tight even though the lock was engaged.

Saturday morning after breakfast, I tidying my counter by the phone when I saw a few mouse dropping against the basksplash. They were so small, it looked like they came from a starving mouse. I promptly disposed of them and sanitized my little counter.  On my grocery list was MOUSE TRAP.

I did grocery today and bought a bunch of banana and as I was in the process of removing the single banana from my banana hanger thingie to hang the fresh bunch, I saw a few more fatter mouse droppings. I could see that the Ms. or Mr. Mouse had dined on my banana and had eaten a fair portion in the back of the banana... Oh yes, the guilty party hid their misdeed  so I couldn't see the damage but Ms. or Mr. Mouse don't know who they're dealing with... I'll get them sooner or later and I hope it will be sooner...

See... I set a trap, wrote them a note to welcome them and I even left them a snack of cheese on the nice little trap hoping they like the cheese I bought on special.

Well truth be said... i wrote a note so my husband would not eat that special banana.

Now I'm patiently waiting to hear a quick and merciful "SNAP"

Yep, Fall isn't even officially here yet and they know it's time to search for warmer housing.

I appreciate your comments. Thanks for visiting and come again if you're not a mouse.

  1. we get them coming up under our siding from the outside. they've torn out enough insulation and rotted wood, it's impossible to stop them. i put poison in the places i can get to between walls. hate it, but...

  2. Yes, it is that time. Even though it is still warm, the vermin know. I have had so many creatures trying to get in the house for the last week.
It is quite alarming. I do hope you catch your little pests.

  3. they do get in the smallest places we always get one or two every fall and they get the mouse trap treatment but we use peanut butter so they have to lick it off.

  4. Oh, I hate mieces to pieces!!! I have been proactive the last couple of years and have already left them "food" in the garage.
Your note is too funny. Thanks for the laugh.

  7. We haven't had mice for a number of years -- maybe because we own a jack Russell terrier? My husband used to use sticky traps -- you could hear the mice thumping around, trying to get away! Good luck Julia, and happy first day of fall. Sarah

  8. Yes I'm surprised I haven't heard the little squeaks and scratches.
I haven't yet, but it won't be long.
We now have a Yorkie and they we're bred to catch rats on ships. It will be interesting to see how she handles them.

  9. Where are your cats???
They are the best mouse deterrents that you can find.

  10. Folks, I caught my little mouse. He needed fattening but not in my house eating my banana. I'll set the trap once more for the Ms. just in case...

  11. Wow! You caught him! Yes, we do not need mice pooping on our food surfaces. Do you have a cat?

  12. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved cats, Julia. If our granddaughter didn't have such severe allergic reactions to cats, I'd get a kitten. I do like their lazy ways and the way they keep watch so there are no mouse invasions.

  13. Well, autumn begins today. Mr/s Mouse may have a calendar. You are funny! Great post. We don't get mice in the house, but I am seeing spiders lately. *augh*

  14. I think I'd dread hearing that snap because I'd know that meant I had to dispose of the thing. But far better than actually having it scurry across your path!

  15. aw poor little mouses! set a cat loose and scare 'em off! .... just saw where you caught one ~ ohhhhhh I hate mouse traps... I had a mouse once and the only thing he'd eat was chocolate. I'm not kidding!

I wouldn't let my husband kill it ... well, he wasn't he was going to use the non snap kind of trap and move it on out to the wooded area.

I saw him a couple of times ... cute little thing. My cats just liked to tease the little thing to death ... he finally left. I quit buying chocolate!

I remember my Mother using mothballs to deter them ...

  16. Glad your trap was successful. We get squirrels in our attic if we don't close the garage door immediately. They scare me running around up there. Once we figured out how they were getting in they moved on. I'd love to feel a little nip in the air.

  17. I hope your mouse traps work!!! There's nothing worse that those nasty creatures, but it's nearly impossible to avoid them on a farm.

  18. Our cat usually gets the mice....but here in the country it's just the way it goes sometimes! I hate to be the one to trap them or find them caught...gives me the creeps! Good luck!

  19. Our numerous cats keep all the mice away. Sorry about your cat.

  20. Well, that was a bold move to come right in uninvited and eat on your last banana. Sure hope the trap works, they love cheese and you get rid of them quickly sweet Julia. Hugs

  21. Maybe they're just wanting some of your good home cookin'!!

  22. There must be some good smells coming from your house. I once had a house full of mice, driving me and my hound dog crazy. I had to set a lot of traps to capture them all. Samson is a great mouser, but lately there haven't been any around our house. Drought once again reducing all animal populations around here.

  23. Glad you caught the mouse Julia. I don't like mice either, wee Rexton has already caught a deer mouse in the kitchen! That cat is going to be a blessing for me. I need to fine out where it came in so no others will follow.
I've been watching for their droppings but haven't seen any so I was quite surprised to see a mouse captured by her in the kitchen while eating breakfast, the 1st week of September.
It is a sign that the cold weather will soon be upon us, keep those traps armed. lol
    Hugs, Cynthia

  24. Hi Julia,
I found you over at Cozy Blanket. What a fun blog. :-) I love your story about the mice. :-)
We have a cat named Little B, he really is a big cat. He loves to catch mice and leave them on the step for us in the morning.
    Good to meet you.

  25. My 19-year-old son is on a church mission in Iowa. A few weeks ago he had a mouse problem and didn't have a mouse trap, so he made one! He filled a bucket with water, stretched a string across the top of the bucket, and attached some yummy food to the center of the string. Along comes the mouse - he went for the bait, fell into the bucket, and drowned. My son sent me a photo, and it was sad and funny at the same time!

  26. I really hate having mice in the house.
I'm sorry I didn't get around to personally notify you about the butterfly award. My goal today. You don't have to do the rules but know that you sre really deserving of bringing light to others. Hugs
