A SNOWY AFTERNOON AND COMFORT FOOD

We had a green Christmas this year and I won't complain. I felt sure-footed as I walked outside but today, it's been snowing and it's warming up after a few really cold days. It's supposed to turn to rain again and someplace, freezing rain.

Yesterday I felt like making Curry Squash soup from a recipe I received from my daughter Christine a few years ago. I used some frozen squash puree I made from our own squash. It was so good and comforting on a cold day.
I like to use my soup tureen often in the winter for soups and chowders. It's made of glazed stoneware so it keeps the content nice and hot for a long time. After it cools, I store the tureen in the fridge.

Sorry about the blurred photo. After I took the photo, I noticed that I had forgotten to change the close-up setting on my camera.

Today I baked some Drop Cheese Biscuits. They were so good with the soup. I had a hard time to stop eating them.

This afternoon, I worked on a challenging puzzle. It's been a Christmas tradition at our house to wind down after the busy Christmas celebrations. I knew it would be a challenge but it turned out to be more challenging than I expected. I started it on Christmas Eves and I worked at it every chance I got and that's all I've got done so far. I picked that one because I love owls. We'll see how long it will take me to complete it.

I must say that Cobble Hill makes quality puzzles and the pieces stay into place otherwise it would be very frustrating. They are made in Victoria BC in Canada... The pieces are random shapes which makes it interesting... The reason I find this one so challenging is that it's from a painting and not from a photograph so the details are not crisp and also the colors all seem to blend in but it's beautiful

This is how much I have managed to put together since Christmas Eve... I sort the pieces by color in plates to facilitate finding the right piece and I stack them to save space.

Today, the waxwings returned to my crabapple tree like they did last year but my window was too dirty with spider webs and grime to take a good picture through it and I didn't want to scare them by opening the door.
I hope that you all had a great day. Thanks for your comments.
Hugs, Julia

  1. We had a green Christmas here too. It's been raining all day today, so it's now green and brown! I love putting puzzles together. The ones with odd shaped pieces look so hard! Enjoy your weekend!

  2. What a wonderful post!!! yummy soup from your sweet daughter, I am sure she was smiling down as you made it. The biscuits look good too. But puzzles I do not like puzzles. My husband loves them and we need to get one out when our life calms down.

  3. Julia your soup looks heavenly as does those drop biscuits yum, yum, yum!! What a lovely bowl, I do love piping hot soup to where I blow on it. Semi warm doesn't cut it for me so I can see how your tureen would come in handy in that department. As for puzzles, I absolutely love them. I just finished one that I started before Christmas, actually after Thanksgiving. Its a mystery puzzle where you read about a mystery and then finish the puzzle to solve it. The clues are hidden in the puzzle. The hard part is they don't give you a picture of what the puzzle looks like so really, its all about sorting colors. I like the owl one you're working on. Glad you have something to work on while the weather figures out what it's going to do. I like the idea of eating hot soup and biscuits while working on a puzzle.
    Have a great weekend!!

  6. I shouldn't have read this before bed because now I'm hungry. But I'll hold off and look for a recipe for Curried Squash Soup tomorrow. I have the squash. What kind of winter squash do you grow? I have Butternut, which I think are the easiest. But my favorites are Buttercup and Honey Nut (which I think is a cross between Buttercup and Butternut). Beautiful puzzle picture. Goodnight, Julia!

    1. Hi Susan, I used buttercup squash but my daughter Christine also uses Butternut squash and even the Hubbard squash. She also make a nice chicken and squash soup but she dices the Buttercup squash. It's very good.

  8. We always have a green Christmas. Haha. But its better than a brown one in years past. I love your puzzle, I bet that would be very hard to put together. It sounds so nice and cozy Julia. I am so glad you get to stay in the house and you don't have to go to the barn in the cold. Have a lovely day.

  10. What a pretty soup tureen and the soup and biscuits sound delicious. I am in the mood for soup, chili and stew now that it is cold here. We have not had snow or anything frozen as yet. Good luck on the puzzle. I work them in the winter and enjoy that very much. I will be staring on one in the near future. Hope you can get photos to share of the waxwings soon. My feeders are staying full of several kinds of birds. Have a very Happy and Blessed New Year sweet Julia. Hugs

  12. Happy New Year my blogging friend!
I popped in for a visit today & was happy to see that our family too puts together a puzzle at this time of the season. This year ours was M.C. Escher - 1000pc. It to was challenging & our youngest son & his girlfriend put it together with little help from Bill & I in 4 days. I love your idea of using the plates & we're going to try that next year as we're always looking under the table to see if any loose single ones have fallen off.
Today is going to be a very snowy one for both of us. I'm so happy to have Bill home till Sunday to plough me out.
Your soup & biscuits look so yummy & I love the soup tureen! So glad to visit & find you enjoying the season.
Wishing you & yours only the very best in 2019!
    Hugs,
    Cynthia

  14. That soup looks so delish and just the perfect way to warm up a winter day whether it's snowing or not! We had a green Christmas too. I have a feeling it will eventually snow and not stop until April...let's see if I'm right this year! It's great to see you relaxing for a change! Puzzles are not my greatest talent but I do enjoy taking the time to put them together. Will you frame it when it's finished? It would make a beautiful picture for the wall! Happy New year to you and your family!
