CAN YOU SMELL THE AROMA?

My goodness I'm tired. I just finished 5 batches of pesto pre mix for the freezer and my legs feel like they recessed half way up into my body and I'm about a foot shorter.

My day started out as usual, my morning trek to the barn, a new born calf was found in the field, born 2 weeks early but on the good side, it's a heifer calf. I wish those cows would smarten up and stick to their due dates.... The two calves who drank from the pail by themselves yesterday  have reverted to needing my fingers to be placed in their mouth before they will suck the milk from the pail, nothing unusual.  They all grow out of it eventually. They are hungrier in the morning and usually are more eager to drink by themselves.

Before lunch I went to pick some green beans in the garden and I saw two baby mourning doves sunning themselves by my Jalapeno pepper plants in the vegetable garden.  They got frightened and went and hid under a nearby tomato plant. I rushed in to get my camera to take a photo. I'm glad that I had recharged my batteries the night before. When I returned with my camera and reset the date they had returned under the Jalapeno plants to sun themselves.  We have a lot of mourning doves around here but I had never seen a pair of baby mourning doves until today. I was so excited that I could get some photos of them. I wish I had a stronger lens on my camera to take better photos.

Here are a few photos from doves to basil.  JB

  1. That pesto looks good - a little pasta and pine nuts....yumm. Great pics capturing the doves. Whenever I run to grab my camera the birds or whatever are long gone. Frustrating! Lol And good luck with the new calf.

  2. Julia - Doves are one of my favorites, I have a pair that come to my yard every summer and I claim they are the same ones. They drink from my little goldfish pond, dust in the no-grass area, and sit on the top board of Renee's swing to sun. You were lucky to have been able to get a picture of them.
Thanks for taking time to comment on Renee's entry. I showed it to her and read what I had typed and you know - the next thing I knew, she was working on her rug - I think that's motivation. When I get home tonight I will read to her your comment.

One of my favorite parts of your story are the babies sucking on your fingers in the bucket - it doesn't get any sweeter than that!

  3. Hi Kim, thanks for your comment. I haven't made the pesto yet. This is just a pre-mix of basil and extra virgin olive oil that I freeze for making my pesto any time I need some. I just thaw the premix and add the other ingredients. Yummy...

Last year I had blight on my basil because of the rainy weather we had and didn't had enough so I only froze a little bit. Very dissapointing for a pesto lover like me. This year I have a bumper crop and I'm fully taking advantage of it. JB

  4. Hi Deb, I noticed an increase in the number of mourning doves around my place over a few years. There used to be just a pair at first and now there are quite few that gathers around my feeder. I only feed the birds during the colder seasons when they need that extra nurishment. I've also noticed an increase of the bird population as people are not using as much chemical on their lawns. Our farm fields are certified organic and we only use liquid cow manure that is quickly turned in the soil. That has helped also.

It's heart warming to see Renee so dedicated on working on her rug. She's a very sweet girl. I wish I could meet her in person.

My new calf is doing great so far and the tiny twin is not as lively as he should be but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Tell Renee that I'm sending her a big HUG via my blog. JB
